Judge Grants Rapists Parental Rights

A Judge in Norfolk, Nebraska granted child visitation rights to a man who sexually assaulted an 18 year old girl. Under current law in Nebraska, parental rights are terminated when one is convicted of first degree sexual assault. The 23 year old who raped her was charged with first degree sexual assault but plea bargained for third degree, giving him visitation rights.

Now the mother is fighting back. She told Omaha.com: “Most victims of rape choose to abort their babies. Those of us who choose to keep our child have to face the overwhelming fear of being bullied and being controlled by the rapist.”

The father states, “I would like to have a normal father-daughter relationship — although, under the circumstances, I realize that may not happen.

This brings up very interesting legal questions pertaining to fatherhood and responsibility. Legally, is the father entitled to parental rights if the creation of that child was rape? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
