Kyle McMahon Exclusive: You are Not Your Deadbeat Dad
The story of a 15 year old boy repaying the debt of his deadbeat father has recently gone viral. While this first happened in September of 2013, it's finally making it's well deserved rounds. If you haven't yet heard, Tona Herndon was visiting the grave of her recently deceased husband when she was mugged by Shane Lunsford. Lunsford stole hundreds of dollars from the grieving widow, who's husband had just passed away the week before. Lunsford told News 9 Oklahoma City, “As the purse came off, I looked him right in the eyes and there was a look in his eyes. It was a look of pain and my thought was 'He doesn't really want to do this'.”  Lunsford then sent $250 to his 15 year old son Christian for an upcoming band trip.

As Lunsford was taken in for his crime, Christian realized where the money had come from. He tracked down Mrs. Herndon and arranged a meeting with her outside of his church, apologized for his father's transgressions and returned the money. What happens next will absolutely warm even the coldest of hearts. (Watch the video below to see).

Christian is further proof that a fatherless son is not his father. His father was in and out of jail for most of his life, giving him one of the worst examples of being a decent human being that he could have. But Christian is not his deadbeat father. In fact, while Christian's example of being a man in today's world has been a deadbeat criminal, he chose to go a different route. No matter what our example is we have the capacity to be different. We make the choices. We can choose to follow in the footsteps of our absent fathers and do the wrong thing or we can choose to do better. Christian Lunsford chose to do better - and the world is all the better for it.

Utah passes law giving fathers new rights in adoption cases

Utah Governor Signs Adoption Bill Giving Fathers New Rights

Utah passes law giving fathers new rights in adoption cases
Utah passes law giving fathers new rights in adoption cases

Utah Governor Gary Herbert has signed a law giving fathers new rights in adoption cases. The Adoption Act Amendments was created to help stop fraudulent adoptions in the state. The new law states that a biological mother must live in Utah for at least 90 days before giving a child up for adoption or she must file information with the courts about the biological father. The court will then notify the biological father before she puts the baby up for adoption.

This law gives biological fathers the option to take custody of their child before he is put up for adoption.

Great job, Utah!

Daryl Hall is a Deadbeat Dad, Darren Hall Speaks Out

Daryl Hall is a Deadbeat Dad, Darren Hall Speaks Out

Daryl Hall is a deadbeat dad; His Son Darren Hall speaks out
Daryl Hall is a deadbeat dad; His Son speaks out

Back in 1983, Hall and Oats co-founder Daryl Hall had a one night stand with a fan, whom ended up pregnant. On January 8, 1984, Darren Hall was born and his father Daryl Hall chose not to be there. Hall actually fought against child support as documented in the court files. In fact, Daryl Hall actually make the claim that he grew up frugally and would want his son to do the same. From the court records: "Hall further described his personal lifestyle as "frugal" and "simple." He indicated that he would want his son Darren to live in a similar manner and to grow up as he did, without expensive music lessons or tutoring."

Darren Hall tells Pop Dust that his father never offered him "help, assistance or even encouragement" in his life or his burgeoning music career. In fact, it wasn't until he was 18 years old that Darren even met his father. The younger Hall told Pop Dust, "I wanted to get to know him you know, and it just didn't feel like that’s what he wanted. Like he was too busy, and I had to fit into his existing schedule if I wanted to interact with him. Not like I was special in any way to him, which I suppose I’m not. After that, I asked for a job on tour, I wanted to get involved with music. He gave me a job selling merchandise at shows, which means you set up before the show starts and work through, then tear down after the show, so that meant I had zero actual contact with any part of the show that had anything to do with music. Just the merchandise bitch...

I was on the road but I barely saw him, he traveled separately from the crew. I was making a salary, but maybe $1,800 monthly, my rent was $1,200, so that doesn't leave much to live on. I was frustrated and a bit angry that I was kinda having this experience, but I was having it from the outside. Like we’d go on a shopping trip and that would entail me following him around watching him buy clothes or books or whatever. That was our main activity, my following him around doing his activities.

I suppose the “final straw” for me was an offhand comment he made, I don’t know if he even knows I heard it. We were at a big family dinner at a B&B and I was sitting down at one end of the table with aunts and uncles, my dad was in the center with his wife and her two kids. The bill came and one of the kids picked up the check and said jokingly, “don’t worry Daryl, I got this,” like a 12-year-old is going to buy dinner. It was funny. So he tousles the kid’s hair and says, “I can’t wait for the day when you can actually grab the check.” My heart dropped, I was like, “that’s what you say to your son? That’s his son… I’ll never have that kind of relationship with him.” I left maybe a week later.
"

They have not even spoken in four years.

Girl Taken From Adoptive Parents Given To Bio Dad

Girl Taken From Adoptive Parents And Given To Biological Father

Nine year old Sonya Hodgins has lived with her adopted family for the past eight years. At birth, her biological mother waived her parental rights and her biological father, John McCaul was in jail. The state revoked the father's rights and Sonya was put up for adoption. Sonya was adopted by the McElhaney family at the age of one.

Recently, her biological father John McCaul, was released from prison and has argued with the state that his parental rights should never have been revoked. A court agreed and reinstated McCaul's parental rights. The McElhaney's were visited by the Tennessee Department of Child Services who took Sonya away from them.  Her uncle stated, "I was there the night they literally took that child away from her mom and dad. They ripped her from their arms. They were down on their knees begging them not to do this. She was calling us, begging us to come and get her. Please don't let them do this to her. And we couldn't do anything. It's horrible".

McCaul has taken Sonya to Nebraska where he plans to live. A judge denied the McElhaneys motion to return the girl to them. They plan to appeal.

This case brings up many issues and questions. Should a girl who's lived with a family since the age of one be given to a man she's never known, even if it is her biological father? Will it be damaging to the girl to be taken from her family and given to her biological father? Should there be mandatory visitation with her adoptive family? What do you think?

Time: 5 Myths About Stay-At-Home Dads

Dave Lesser wrote a piece for Time titled "5 Myths About Stay-At-Home Dads". He brings up some interesting points that many stay-at-home dads may have to deal with.

1. You can't trust us with your children.
2. We can't have as special a bond with our children as mothers can.
3. We are not nurturers.
4. We are trying to be better than moms.
5. We are the only dads you should be paying attention to.

Check out the full article for some great insight into the plight of stay-at-home dads.

Super Bowl Ad Shows Gay Fathers

Super Bowl Ad Shows Gay Fathers

Last night's Super Bowl 48 had some exciting - and down right boring - moments. Bruno Mars halftime performance was a highlight, as was one commercial in particular. Coca Cola's ad, entitled "It's Beautiful" features all sorts of different families to a soundtrack of "America The Beautiful" in eight different languages. In on scene, two fathers are scene rollerskating with their daughter. GLAAD notes that this is the first Super Bowl ad in history to feature a same sex couple. At Fatherless.co, we celebrate any man that stands up to be a father. Congratulations to you Coca-Cola, for your bravery in showing many types of American families. We raise our glass of Coke to you!

Sperm Donor Owes Child Support

Sperm Donor Owes Child Support

Sperm Donor To Lesbian Couples Owes Child Support in Kansas
Sperm Donor To Lesbian Couple Owes Child Support
A Kansas judge ruled that a man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple must now pay child support. William Marotta had responded to an online ad seeking a sperm donor for a lesbian couple. Since the parties did not include the services of a licensed physician, Marotta did not qualify as a sperm donor by law. Since the couple is now applying for state assistance, he is required to pay child support. The couple has received about $6,000 in public assistance.

This state ruling brings up some interesting questions. Is it the child that is entitled to the public assistance or the parents of the child? If the sperm donor knowingly went into the agreement, absolving himself of responsibility, to the agreement of the other parents, is he responsible?

Tell us what you think in the comments.

How Oprah Changed Kyle McMahon's Life

Oprah & Kyle McMahon, Oprah's Lifeclass Fatherless Sons Show #4
Kyle McMahon and Oprah,  Oprah's Lifeclass
How Oprah Changed My Life

by Kyle McMahon

Since before I was born Oprah was on the TV. My mom always had the Oprah Show on, so I had literally grown up watching her. Over the years, I found myself listening more intently with the wisdom she shared with the world. Living your best life. Nourishing your spirit. Listening for the moments. It began to become a part of my identity. I picked up the books and did the worksheets. I began waiting for the next episode to help continue to enrich my life in the way that had become so nourishing to my soul.

She had become a part of my daily life. When the Oprah show ended, fittingly, I sat with my Mom and we turned on the TV and watched the finale. It was a powerful moment, but a sad one. I felt that I would be losing something I had grown up with.  OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network had been announced and had launched, but I wondered if it would be the same. I wondered if I would get the same things from OWN that I got from the Oprah Show. Oh, how unfounded those thoughts were.

Is Justin Bieber's Father To Blame?

Is Justin Bieber's father, Jeremy, to blame for his troubles?
Is Justin Bieber's father to blame?
Is Justin Bieber's Father To Blame?

Pop star Justin Bieber seems to be spiraling out of control. Business Insider posits that it might be Justin Bieber's father, Jeremy, that could be the cause. After being arrested last week for drag racing while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and prescription pills, it came out that not only was his father present, but was most likely assisting his son.

At only 38 years old, Jeremy is craving the limelight himself. He had left Justin and his mother early in Justin's life to start a family with a new woman. It wasn't until after Justin became famous that Jeremy came back into touch with him. At one point, he even had plans to release a hip-hop album of his own. Paparazzi photos abound with Jeremy hanging out with the younger Bieber, his 32 year old manager Scooter Braun, and a host of other 18-35 year old artists hoping to make it as big as their friend.

Instead of engaging and encouraging the behavior that this troubled 19 year old is exhibiting, Jeremy should be doing everything in his power to stop it. It seems, his fear is to be cut off from Justin's fame and money. That may very well end up at the cost of his sons life.

Judge Grants Rapist Parental Rights

Nebraska Judge Grants Rapist Parental Rights
Nebraska Judge Grants Parental Rights to Rapist
Judge Grants Rapists Parental Rights

A Judge in Norfolk, Nebraska granted child visitation rights to a man who sexually assaulted an 18 year old girl. Under current law in Nebraska, parental rights are terminated when one is convicted of first degree sexual assault. The 23 year old who raped her was charged with first degree sexual assault but plea bargained for third degree, giving him visitation rights.

Now the mother is fighting back. She told Omaha.com: “Most victims of rape choose to abort their babies. Those of us who choose to keep our child have to face the overwhelming fear of being bullied and being controlled by the rapist.”

The father states, “I would like to have a normal father-daughter relationship — although, under the circumstances, I realize that may not happen.

This brings up very interesting legal questions pertaining to fatherhood and responsibility. Legally, is the father entitled to parental rights if the creation of that child was rape? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Kyle McMahon And James Taranto Feud Over Fatherlessness

Kyle McMahon And James Taranto Feud Over Fatherlessness

Kyle McMahon / K.Mac Music / Kyle Mac / KMAC
Kyle McMahon / K.Mac Music / Kyle Mac
Fatherless Son posterboy, recording artist & advocate Kyle McMahon (who we recently announced a partnership with) has written an article for the Huffington Post in response to the Wall Street Journal piece by James Taranto. In the WSJ piece, which we first reported about a few days ago, Taranto claims women entering the workforce and birth control pills are the reason for the rise in fatherlessness in America.  McMahon's piece is a direct response to that WSJ article.

There is now a bit of a Twitter war going on between the two and their camps. The good from this is that it keeps the conversation of the fatherless on the minds of the public. The unfortunate news is that it continues to shine a light on the amount of uninformed and willfully ignorant on the reasons men abandon their children. As we always say, education is the biggest combatant of ignorance.

Study Shows Today's Fathers Are More Hands On

Study Shows Today's Fathers Are More Hands On

A new report from the National Center for Health Statistics, a part of the Center for Disease Control, shows that father involvement has increased since the same study was done in 2002. Four thousand fathers from age 15 - 44 were interviewed from 2006 - 2010.

For fathers with children younger than 5:

*Almost 2 out of 3 fathers read to their children several times per week
*9 out of 10 fathers bathed, diapered, helped with the toilet and dressed their kids several times per week

"It's a meaningful trend. I don't think my father ever changed a diaper," says researcher Jo Jones - who assisted on the report. The trend upward is though to be based, on part, on the more equal work schedules of parents. The "stay-at-home" mom family is no longer the norm. Today single parent households are actually the norm. Together with "stay-at-home" dads, co-parenting and just about every situation you can think of, it is helping to cause father's to be a more active participant in their child's life.

"Since Dad died, I've been through a whole spectrum of emotions. I was angry. I was upset. I was confused. I went through all of those emotions several times. Initially it was anger because it was such a selfish thing to do. It also made me realize how stupid not reaching out over pride was."

He goes on:

"I got married recently. It brought everything back to the surface, because my dad wasn't there to see it. my father wasn't at my wedding, not because of some unfortunate accident, but because of a decision that he made."

Journalist Blames Women For Fatherless Generation

Journalist Blames Women for Fatherless Generation

Wall Street Journal writer James Taranto blames women for the rise of fatherless children in the United States. In a recent column titled The Moralistic Fallacy, Taranto writes what he believes are the two main causes of fatherlessness in the United States:

"The first is the rise of female careerism.....The second is the introduction of the pill, which the Food and Drug Administration approved for contraceptive use in 1960. It made nonmarital sex far more easily available, reducing the incentive for men to marry...."

It is exactly this type of mis-information that hurts the cause. Fathers and fathers alone are responsible for their choices. Blaming women for working, or for taking oral contraceptives just tries to take the responsibility of of exactly who deserves it: the fathers who leave their children.
